New Year to see Redlands well represented
at national softball titles

A host of Redlands softball players have been picked to represent Queensland teams at next year’s Australian Championships.

The teams have been selected following a series of State Softball Championships played across Queensland in recent weeks.

Over half of the 2012 Queensland Patriots open men’s softball team is
made-up of Redlands players including captain Jason Nathan and local teammates William Bailey, Andrew Blackshaw, Guy Covacin, Shaun Goffer, Julian Jemmott, Adam Pearce, Darren Pyke and Luke Van de Griendt.

The Patriots will compete at the 2012 John Reid Shield in February in Sydney where they will aim to build on their national runners-up
placing this year.

The Patriots players will also have the opportunity to impress national selectors who will be updating the national squad to work towards
defending Australia’s world title at the 2013 Men’s World Softball Championship.

There will also be a large number of Redlands players representing Queensland at under age tournaments in 2012.

Mitchell Daly, Jeremy Jemmott, Marshall Kronk, Ryan Merriman and Aaron Whitefield have been selected in the Queensland under 19 men’s team while Aaron Whitefield has also been selected in the Queensland
under 17 boy’s line-up with other local teammates including Carlin Anderson, Brandon Goffer, Christopher Kacin, Jarrod Polzin and James Purcell.

The under 19 team will compete at the Australian Under 19 Men’s Championship in Canberra in January while in the same month
the under 17 boys will participate at the Australian Under 17 Boys Championship in Melbourne.

This year the Queensland Under 19 Men’s team finished third at nationals while the Queensland Under 17 Boys took home the Australian title.

In addition to state pride, the players in the male under 17 and 19 age groups will be competing for positions in the Australian team to play
at the 2012 Junior Men’s World Championship in Argentina.

Australia has won the past four consecutive Junior Men’s World Softball Championships.

In the female divisions, Redlands players Brittney Flint and Tania
Puketapu have been selected in the Queensland under 19 women’s team while Sara Caterson, Rebecca McEachern and Alisha Prybyszcuk have
been selected in the Queensland under 17 girls side.

The under 19 team will compete at the Australian Under 19 Women’s Championship in Perth in January while in the same month the
under 17 girls will participate at the Australian Under 17 Girls Championship in Hobart.

This year the Queensland Under 19 Women’s team finished fifth at nationals while the Queensland Under 17 Girls finished national runners-up.

The competition will be fierce at the championships as all players will be eager to test their skill against those who have returned fresh from the 2011 Junior Women’s World Softball Championship to be played in South Africa.

To top of all off, six Redlands players, Megan Blake, Sheridan Darroch, Brittney Flint, Tammy McMillan, Brooke Spence and Jade Wall, will represent the Queensland Heat open women’s team in round one of the 2011/2012 national Gilley’s Shield in Melbourne this weekend.

The Gilley’s Shield is Australia’s premier open women’s softball
tournament which is played over four rounds and four months in
four different states.

This season the Queensland Heat will be aiming to improve on their
bronze medal finish in the 2010/2011 tournament and secure positions
in the Australian line-up to train towards the 2012 Women’s World Championship.
